GUTTED- THE FIGHT OF KALK BAY FISHERS

The fishermen and women processors of Kalk Bay share a special connection with the sea, as fishing is inherently part of their culture and heritage - a tradition passed on from one generation to the next. The threat of harmful industrial fishing has lead to the fast deterioration of traditional fishing communities on the Cape Flats, driving them into economic and social despair.

I wanted to create a deeper understanding of the socioeconomic issues plaguing the Cape Flats. Far to often, social commentary resorts to lazy, surface-level narratives of a hopeless community which is self-inflicting the hardship it faces. I wanted people to know that everything going on in Cape Town is systemic, and that the Cape Flats community is not passive in the fight for their right to a dignified life.
